Carole, There's Some Guy Here with a News Camera!

Upon arriving home, after some more hugs and cheers for Scarecrow, we let the dogs out to see if they would recognize Ted.

Of course, Zelda, our ditzy puppy, wagged her tail and licked him all over.  However, she does this to anyone, including strangers, so it was not helpful in gauging whether or not the dogs would recognize him.  Rubi sniffed and walked away, as she should have, as the "hiker funk" was still in his clothes.  It was not until he whistled to her as he had done for years that she realized it was her master.  I think they missed Teddy just as much as he missed them.

More friends and family gathered to greet our Triple Crown Hero, We ordered some pizzas, expecting to just hang out and hear about Scarecrow's adventures.  What we did not expect was for two guys to ring the doorbell with cameras in hand ready to interview Scarecrow about his latest accomplishment.  Ted called out, "Carole, there is some guy here with a news camera."  I went to the door, and was asked, "Are you Corinne?"  I thought they got my name wrong, but I found out that our dear friends, Matt and Corinne Bernath, who were expected to arrive shortly at the house, contacted channel news 12 days before to alert them of Scarecrow's homecoming.  They were excited to interview a local resident with a positive story.  If you haven't seen the clip that I flooded my facebook page with, you can  CLICK HERE to see it.  We are so proud of you Teddy.

I love this next picture, but I am still trying to decide if Teddy is asking for the play-by-play of life in our home while he was gone, or the kids are telling him about everything they weren't allowed to do while he was gone...

Either way, we are so happy to have Teddy back home safely, with this amazing goal accomplished.  He is now  "Mastic Man", thanks to News 12, and our Triple Crown Hiker who had a dream and then went out there and achieved it.

As you heard in the news clip, Scarecrow's adventures are NOT over... he will revisit the CDT in the summer of 2016, only this time on a bike.  He, and our friend Matt Bernath, will "Ride the Divide" so stay tuned.  Since this news clip he has spoken to several groups of children about his adventures, so I will post those events here as well.

Proud of my Triple Crown Hiker Hubby,

Scarecrow's Triple Crown Homecoming!

It has been almost a month since Scarecrow arrived home to his family and friends.  It has been a whirlwind to say the least.  Let me rewind and share with you some of the highlights and happenings of Scarecrow since his completion of the CDT on September 23rd... the day he became a Triple Crown Hiker.

To arrive home to us from the finish line, Scarecrow had to travel from Canada back into the United States, via a hitch from a couple named David and Melissa D'Angelo.   I had shared an email they sent on September 24t.  I will repost this from an earlier entry:
An email entitled "Greetings from a Scarecrow Hitch" came through today:

Hi,
I wanted to let you know my wife and I had the pleasure of picking up Teddy this afternoon just south of the US/Canada border. Please wish him once again our congrats on having just completed the Triple Crown. While he may have been stinky on the exterior, it was quite clear he's awesome on the inside. We had a great opportunity to talk before dropping him off in East Glacier. It was fun to hear about his adventures. We hope that when you and your family get to visit Glacier, that you'll enjoy it as much as my wife and I have.
Wishing you all the best,
David & Melissa D'Angelo
PS: Once I get the photos off the camera, I'll send you a photo from an overlook we took while driving with Teddy to East Glacier.

THANK YOU again to David and Melissa,  and thank you for getting Teddy safely to his destination.

Once back in the United States, in the town of East Glacier, Montana, he would catch a train in the Amtrak Station to Spokane, Washington.  This train would arrive at 3:45 a.m. where our family trail angels, Willie and Mary Ruthkowski, would pick him up and bring him to their house about 45 minutes away.  While enjoying comfort of family, Teddy got to rest, visit with two amazing people and have the best waffles he had ever eaten.  As a matter of fact, a waffle iron is now on our purchase list because of Aunt Mary's recipe.

Scarecrow visits with the Ruthkowski trail angels
After a few hours of catching up on Scarecrow's adventure, it was time to be driven to the Spokane airport for a flight to Denver, Colorado to begin his journey back across the country to New York.  A huge thank you goes out to Aunt Mary and Uncle Willie for the pick up and drop off from teh Amtrak and airport, along with the meal, company, love and support you continue to show me and my family.

After a safe flight to Denver, Scarecrow stayed in a local motel overnight in anticipation of his early morning flight (6:00 a.m.) to New York, via a layover in Maryland.  I am sure he was just as anxious as his family to get home after all of that traveling.

While Teddy was plane hopping on Southwest Airlines, some of his biggest supporters gathered at the airport to greet him as he arrived.  We were all excited and nervous to see Teddy.  I also was lucky enough to have Darien Maginn there with us to capture the anticipation, happiness, excitement, love and support that was waiting for Teddy as he disembarked the plane.  She, as most of you know, is the amazing photographer who joined us for Teddy's last homecoming from his PCT adventure.  Thank you so much for your fantastic work and for capturing these very important, exciting memories for me and my family.

Cathy, the kids and I made posters to greet Scarecrow - I was happy to have something to hold onto as I awaited the sight of Teddy turning the corner.  As we waited, with each person exiting the plane and walking through the gate, my heart began beating faster and faster.  He was basically the LAST one to come through the gate to greet us, but as soon as we had a glimpse of his tall, thin frame coming around the corner, excitement was everywhere.

We were clapping, waving, and I was crying of course.  Pride, relief, happiness, joy and love filled the airport for Scarecrow as he turned the corner and came through the door, walking stick in hand.  He looked so much thinner, and much hairier than when we saw him last!! It's a DONE DEAL - he left on his journey and returned a TRIPLE CROWN HIKER.

As anxious as everyone was to see Teddy and congratulate him, the kids and I were able to give a first round of hugs and present him with our own version of the crown he has worked so hard to achieve.

We are so blessed to have such wonderful friends and family in our lives, celebrating these amazing moments with us, being there with and for us, and sharing in our joy and happiness as we cheer Scarecrow on towards his goal.

Thank you to everyone who came to the airport to greet Scarecrow as he arrived home.  And thank you Darien Maginn, for capturing these moments - you were right on point with his homecoming AGAIN.  I loved putting together this comparison of your amazing work from the last two trails.

We were headed home to begin our homecoming celebration.

Grateful and appreciative for the support,

The Picture We have Waited 5 Months and 6 days For...

IT'S A DONE DEAL - after 5 months and 6 days, Scarecrow has completed the Continental Divide Trail.

I cannot even begin to express the pride I feel over this picture.  I still cannot believe that it has happened for you, Teddy.  Olive Juice, to the moon and back.

Another perfect photo spot is the dock - unfortunately Teddy was by himself and had to set the timer and run to the end to grab this next photo... kkind of reminded me of how Grandma Utz used to get into place after setting her camera timer <3

You truly are an inspiration, Scarecrow!!

1 day, 16 hours, and 54 minutes left,

More Trail Angel Messages!!

It touches my soul to its core to receive these emails from random people who have interacted with Teddy for a moment, a car ride, or an afternoon of chatting.  Every single one has stated how great it was to meet Teddy, and how excited they were to find out how far he has come, and how much he is anxious to see his family and friends...
I do not think Teddy realizes just HOW MUCH he has impacted our lives.  He has inspired people to live their dreams, and go after what they want, and support others who want to achieve their goals.  I am so proud of you, Scarecrow, and cannot wait to see you on Friday.

More Messages!!

Only minutes after receiving the call from Teddy, saying he is standing in Canada a few miles past the finish line, I received another email from a gentleman who met Scarecrow yesterday.  He wrote:

Hi. I met Ted minutes from Piegan Pass yesterday eve.  I asked where he had been today... He impressed me with his thankfulness.  Happy reunions to you both.
Cheers,
Steve

Thank you Steven Lock, for checking in with this message - we are so excited to have Teddy back home this week, and are so proud of his accomplishments!!!

Several Scarecrow Sightings!

TWO emails came in today from people who have run into Scarecrow - how exciting!

The first was from Jane Hamel, entitled "Scarecrow on Sunday Afternoon" who wrote:

In Glacier with only 50+ miles to finish.  He wanted to let you know he is anxious to finish and excited to get home.  Looks great here while holding his mountain yard sale (drying out his gear)

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE PICTURE and for checking in with us - it's nice to be prepared on just how "outdoorsy" Scarecrow is looking these days.  It definitely looks as if he is in need of some major home cooking when he gets home.

The second came from Laura ODell, entitled "Scarecrow Spotted" who wrote:

Hi! We bumped into your husband on the trail today. He was headed towards Piegan Pass.  He seemed pretty excited to only have 43 miles (he estimates three days left).  He just wanted to let you know he is safe.

THANK YOU for checking in with us - we are beyond excited to get him home to us.  The trail angels have NO IDEA how amazing these check ins are for Scarecrow's family.

There won't be too many more opportunities to track his progress, but here is one of the LAST ones.

Thankfully, almost at at the end,

A Signal from Scarecrow = Pretty Pictures

Warren Lake
As Scarecrow flies through Montana towards the finish line of the CDT, we have heard from him several times from his cell phone, or his hiking buddy Medic's phone with a pretty weak signal.  It was never quite strong enough to send pictures, but we loved hearing the updates and progress being made.  Finally, Scarecrow has entered into an area where he has a signal.  He was able to send some updated pictures of his latest stops. These first two pictures were in an email entitled "Warren Lake."

Warren Peak, Warren Lake, Scarecrow Warren

It looks like it is getting really cold, but the lake, with Warren Peak behind him made for a beautiful picture.  Great job, Mr. Warren.  Just so you know, this picture is my new laptop background - I love it.

As Teddy updated me over the past few weeks, he had said it was getting colder, with temperatures in the twenties, and some light snow.  Well, I guess he didn't want to worry us too much by telling us about the storm he must have been traveling through.

It looks okay in this picture, with the sun out, and the trees lightly covered, with what looks like a path through the snow.  Well, the other pictures from this same email, entitled "Snow Storm", were the ones that had me a bit more concerned.  Yes, Teddy failed to mention the sightings of the tremendous BEAR PRINTS in the fresh snow.  Teddy is a shoe size 14, so this should show you just how large the bear was who was traveling a little too close to where Scarecrow was.

fresh bear tracks in the snow
And, this last picture made me shiver - for obvious reasons.

time to de-ice the beard, Scarecrow
This picture was taken on September 11, and he is heading North to colder temperatures.  No, that is not just more gray hair in his beard - it's FROZEN.  At least he is smiling this time - thoughts and memories of the PCT came rushing back, with the photo of Teddy frozen, in snow, taken on the day he stepped off the PCT due to weather.  Would weather get in his way again? Will he be able to push through and make it to the end?? Once I saw the next two pictures, I was relieved.  They were in the email entitled, "Fall is Here". I can only imagine how beautiful the changing leaves and landscape are as he heads further North towards Canada.

YES, he will not be held back by Mother Nature and harsh weather.  The bright side in all of this is that the weather will not get in the way of his successful completion of this trail.  He has made it through all of the weather elements, and as I type this, only a day or two away from the finish line.  I am anxiously awaiting the text/call that it is a "DONE DEAL".

For now, click HERE for his latest location.  As for travel arrangements, I will continue to keep you all posted.  THANK YOU to all who have expressed an interest to greet him as he arrives on Friday at the airport.  We cannot wait.

Until next time,
The Thruhiker's Wife

Almost to the Finish Line

The day we have been waiting for!!! Scarecrow called from East Glacier Park - the last town stop before heading on to the end.  Hebsaid he was actually a bit ahead of schedule and is about to reach the monument at the end of the CDT on Monday - WOW  This now means if I can secure flights and transportation for Teddy over the next day or two, we could be collecting him from the airport on WEDNESDAY next week!!!

For those of you who asked about his travel plans and arrival home, I will definitely keep you posted over the next few days about definitive plans.  Some have expressed an interest in greeting him at the airport - he would LOVE that.  He is very much looking to be back home and reconnect with family and friends.  There would be nothing better than to have you all there to show him some love and support as he lands - it will DEFINITELY be at MacArthur airport and I am looking at a 5:15 pm landing.  I will know for sure after talking with him further over the next day or two.

The day is here where I can say, my (almost) Triple Crown hiker will be back home next week.  I will post again VERY SOON with an update.

Until next time,
The Thruhiker's Wife

Trail Angel Texts :)

Three amazing check ins have made my day! I received a call from Teddy this morning - he sounds great and is happy to report that he has only 366 miles left until he reaches the finish line.  His estimated finish date is Septemeber 25th.  I cannot believe the end is near.  We are so proud of you Scarecrow.

I received two separate emails from people who have run into Scarecrow over the past week and I am lucky enough to be able to thank them both for the photos they sent.

Hello,
I live in Helena Montana.  This evening I was on a moonlight group hike (the clouds did not cooperate) on the CDT when our group ran into your husband and his hiking companion.  We advised them of the changing weather - much colder and snow in the mountains in the next day or two.  An offer of a ride to town was extended if they wanted to hold up til the weather passed but they declined. They had another sixty six miles or so to get to Lincoln, MT a small town down/over the road.
It was a treat to meet such accomplished hikers.  We wished them well in the rest of their journey.  It was delightful to meet them!
I hope you enjoy the photo.

Best regards,
Brenda

This picture is of Scarecrow (looking pretty scary, I might add) and Medic.  They have been hiking together for several hundred miles and have been great keeping each other on track pushing 30+ miles daily.  Way to go guys.  Thank you Brenda for sharing this awesome picture of our hiker guys to share with family and friends who miss them.

Dear Thruhiker's Wife,
We met these two great hikers on Chief Joseph Pass a few days ago and took them down to the Sula store. What a wonderful encounter! (One of many in our US-travels...). We thought you might like the picture. And of course we wish them  all the best for the remaining portion.
All the best from two Swiss car-travellers (currently still in the US)

Thank you to Geri & Christine from Switzerland for sending me a Scarecrow check-in.  We all enjoy the pictures you send of our hiker that is coming home soon.

THANK YOU and God Bless all the trail angels and kind people who are traveling out there along the trail who have helped, inspired and have shown their kindness and generosity to the hikers on the CDT.

Picture-less Post :(

I have had several check ins from Scarecrow, but was holding out on writing in hopes of him sending pictures to go along with the post.  No such luck.  He is in and out of towns, successfully completing 30+ miles a day along with a new hiker friend Medic. The only thing missing is a good signal to send pictures.  He sounds strong, happy and is getting quite emotional when he thinks and speaks about finishing this trail.  He has less than 500 miles left of this amazing journey.

Back on September 3rd, he passed through a town called Sula, Montana and while there decided to eat breakfast at the Sula Country Store.  I only know this because later that day, I received a text from Lori Johnson that read:

Hi Thruhikers Wife!!  I am the cook at the Sula Country Store, and wanted to let you know that I fed Scarecrow and Medic a good breakfast this morning and sent them off to the trail.  Scarecrow looks great and healthy and is in very good spirits!! The thought of Triple Crowning is starting to set in for them.

THANK YOU Lori Johnson, for not only feeding them, but for checking in with his family  -we love to hear from people who have seen, helped or just met Scarecrow while he is away.

Scarecrow will be in Lincoln, Montana in about 5 days from today, so if you were interested in sending him a note, treat, or any other type of package, NOW is the time to do it.

Again, the United States Postal Service address is:

THEODORE "SCARECROW" WARREN
c/o THREE BEARS MOTEL
PO BOX 816
LINCOLN, MONTANA 59639

Teddy has said he thinks he will complete this trail on September 25th.  Please keep him in your prayers and positive thoughts as he travels through 20 degree weather to reach Glacier National Park and the finish line of this trail.  I will post again with updates as they come in (hopefully with pictures next time).  Check out his progress HERE

Until next time,

Sending Stuff to Scarecrow

via Google images

For those of you who have asked, I am providing a mail drop that Teddy will be stopping at 18 days from now.  Many of you have wanted to send a note of encouragement, a package of treats and goodies or a few bucks for laundry or a meal.  Again I will say, NONE of this is being requested by Ted, but so appreciated by him, for the love and support you all have shown to him along the way has assisted in his success of this extremely rigorous trail.  If you are planning on sending anything, I am listing the US Postal Service mailing address, as well as the UPS mailing address.  Keep in mind, even the smallest of things will uplift Scarecrow's spirit and energy for the last leg of this trip.

USPS Address:
Theodore "Scarecrow" Warren
c/o Three Bears Motel
PO Box 816
Lincoln, Montana  59639

UPS Address:
Theodore "Scarecrow" Warren
c/o Three Bears Motel
203 Main Street
Lincoln, Montana  59639

He likes Snickers, Peanut M&Ms, trail mix, Macadamia Nuts, cashews, etc.  But, secretly, even more than food, I hope and wish he gets flooded with notes of encouragement and excitement about his accomplishments and upcoming Triple Crown success.  We are so blessed to be around such supportive family and friends, and all of your kind words, love and support is what helps us stay so positive.
via Google images

What do you say? Can you take a moment and jot down a quick thought, joke, memory or word of encouragement?  These priceless treasures would surely put a smile on our favorite hiker's face and give him that extra little push to keep his goals and the finish line in sight.

These treats, notes, well wishes and support are the best trail magic a hiker can wish for.  I thank you all in advance for showing Scarecrow how proud we are of him, how much we miss and love him, and how excited we are of him for going after his dreams and achieving his goals, and for taking us all along for the ride.

My wish for you Scarecrow is:

From Belly Aches to Bear Spray

photo taken by The Real Hiking Viking
We finally heard from Scarecrow, who finally made it to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, where, along with a billion other tourists, saw Old Faithful erupt while taking a rest with Jabba and Bobcat.  Little did Scarecrow know that the next few days ahead of him would erupt into illness and fatigue.  As Scarecrow and his buddies arrived into the park, he said he felt nauseous and weak.  As they waited on the food line for burgers and soda, Scarecrow felt light headed and actually fainted.  Thanks to Jabba, who caught him before he hit the ground, Scarecrow was able to get to a bench and eat and try and hydrate himself.  There was not much success however.  As the minutes and hours went on, Scarecrow became sicker and sicker.  After checking in to a motel room and spending the night with some terrible stomach issues, Scarecrow paid a visit to the infirmary in the park.  Uncertain of whether his symptoms were from Giardia or from E. Coli, they gave him antibiotics and medicine to stop the horrific symptoms that kept him weak and exhausted, needing a bathroom nearby at all times.  After a day and a half off the trail, he decided to push through the awful feeling and begin again on the trail.  He then did a 25 mile day.

He officially weighed himself while at the infirmary and has lost a total of 40 pounds.  With 850 miles left to hike, this could get scary for him.  Good thing I know how to cook now, so I can fatten him up when he gets back home.

Upon leaving Yellowstone National Park and the state of Wyoming, Scarecrow will enter the Centennial Mountains of Idaho.  The trail follows along the Idaho/Montana state lines and then diverts east through the Anaconda Mountain Range toward Butte, Montana.  He checked in today, from a town called Sawtell, Idaho.  While in this town, he met a trail angel named Bob Syring.  After getting in to talking with the gentleman, he asked Teddy what type of bear spray he was carrying.  Scarecrow showed him, and Bob insisted on driving home and retrieving a better one for him to carry.  So, a huge THANK YOU goes out to Bob, for looking out for Scarecrow as he hikes through bear country with better spray for protection.

As we wrapped up our conversation, I was happy to hear that Scarecrow was feeling and sounding better after all of his belly aches and pains.  He is in the homestretch and feeling really good about his schedule to finish the CDT.  He also promised to provide me with a mail drop for any and all who have asked for an address to send him notes, goodies, and well wishes.  Look out for the next blog post with that information.

Where is he NOW?

Until next time,

Trail Angels Are At It Again!!

I received an email a few days ago from a woman named Kris, who turned out to be yet another trail angel for Scarecrow.  Her email read:

Thruhiker's Wife,
I am hoping this email reaches you.  As my husband and I were out on a gold panning and gem hunt today we stopped in Muddy Gap, Wyoming for gas where I had asked the cashier for directions or a map to South Pass.  Scarecrow was there and told us of the incredible journey he is on and was headed in the same direction, so there we picked up our short time traveling companion.  For the next 110 or so miles to South Pass City we got to hear about his travels and about some of the places he has been on this journey and about some of the cool ppl he's met along the way.  He told us about your blog and I've enjoyed reading about the different stops he's made along the way.  I can't imagine how hard it would be to be away from my family for that long and I have a lot of respect for you and your family as I'm sure its a journey for all of you.  How joyful it must be when Scarecrow returns looking at how far he's come.  It was nice to meet him and read your blog.  Safe travels and best wishes.
Kris

Just the night before, Teddy called saying he had received a ride from Rawlins from a man named Mike, who dropped him off in Muddy Gap.  While in the convenience store he had been chatting with the cashier and explained his dilemma of needing to get a ride up to South Pass City.  So, when this couple had mentioned they were going that way, the cashier connected Scarecrow with them.  Scarecrow never did get the name of the cashier, but THANK YOU for passing along Scarecrow's information.

I wanted to post a picture of the convenience store, so that other hikers can utilize this helpful rest area along their journey.  I took a chance and decided to call there and see if I could get the name of the wonderful woman who helped Scarecrow with his ride that day.  I spoke with a delightful, helpful woman named Karla, who said she was not the one who helped Scarecrow, but the only other cashier, a woman named Kim, must have been the one.  THANK YOU BOTH for reaching out and helping these hikers as they make their way along this rigorous trail.  My wish is for all hikers to stop into your fine establishment and be able to receive the kind, generous hospitality that you have shown Scarecrow.  Check out 3 Forks Muddy Gap Services if you are in the area.  They are the BEST.

A HUGE THANK YOU also goes out to Kris, and her husband Nick, (thankfully Scarecrow got their names) for your kindness and generosity in giving Scarecrow a ride up to South Pass City.  He was dropped off at the trail head and is 100% connected with his footsteps now.  He will venture north along trail he has not seen yet.  Although he has a few hundred miles left in Wyoming, and just Montana to conquer, I feel like we are in the homestretch.

Click HERE to check out his progress on the map.

Waiting on another check-in for pictures from Scarecrow.

Until next time,

Meeting the Mayor

Greg Salisbury,  Mayor of Encampment, WY
A quick update and big THANK YOU to the mayor of Encampment, Wyoming who agreed to give Scarecrow a ride to Rawlins early this morning.  The trail angel John Farr, who hosted Scarecrow last night, organized the pick up, knowing the Mayor commuted in the exact direction Scarecrow was headed.
We are so grateful for the generosity and kindness of the trail angels out west.  Your willingness to help out hikers, especially ones who look like Scarecrow, is so appreciated.  Thank you again.

Positive energy and hopeful wishes are being sent out to Scarecrow, as he now has to figure out how to transport himself from Rawlins up to South Pass City, (this is the section of trail he has already completed), so that he can get back on the trail, for the homestretch through Montana in to Glacier National Park.

I am sure by this afternoon, he will have a plan and be well on his way.

Until next time,
The Thruhiker's Wife
