There's No Place Like Home!

The day has come ~ Scarecrow has made it back home to his family after COMPLETING THE PACIFIC CREST TRAIL.  Teddy awoke very early Sunday morning, and with more help from our Jump Trail Angels, took a flight from Seattle, and landed in JFK at 8:00 pm.  He collected his backpack and stick, hopped on the Air train to Jamaica, and out to Ronkonkoma where Dakota, Jagger and I were waiting for his arrival.  Even though he was only gone for 26 days this time, we were just as excited to see him as when he was gone for 5 months.  I was happy though, he did not look like the Scarecrow we had greeted last fall.  He looks clean cut, happy, and rested.  We drove home, catching Teddy up on all our news, and he shared some stories of his last days on the PCT.

Of course, I cannot wait to get a hold of his camera to see all of the pictures he took from the last leg of his adventure.  They will be posted as soon as we can, along with the stories that go along with them.  I cannot say enough how appreciative we are for everyone's support and well wishes through out this journey.  Teddy and I both agree we are blessed to have all of you in our lives.

Congratulations Scarecrow ~ 2 trails down, 1 to go.  We are all so proud of you.

Happy, grateful, and blessed,

In The Home Stretch...

After almost a week of no communication, I finally heard from Scarecrow.  He called from Stehekin, Washington on Sunday night with nothing but excellent news.  The trails are clear, the weather is beautiful, and he is now only 90 miles away from the "finish line" in Canada.  He expects to complete these 90 miles by Friday afternoon.  He said the landscape he is witnessing is breathtaking and the pictures he took do not do justice to their true beauty.  I am anxious to get a hold of his camera to check out the final pictures of this extraordinary journey.  He explained how he had to buy a calling card and use a "satellite phone" because he is really in the middle of nowhere over in the Northern Cascade Mountains ~ good thing I picked up, because I wasn't going to being that I did not recognize the number.

His plan is to average 20 mile days, give or take a few, and soak in the feelings of accomplishing his dream as he approaches the last days and miles of the United States and Canada that will complete his Pacific Crest Trail experience.

I will not hear from Teddy until after he reaches the monument in Canada and then walks another 8 miles to Manning Park, which is where he will be able to finally see civilization again after being in the woods.  So for the next few days, I hope you will join me in sending Teddy prayers, positive energy, and support as he approaches the end of this emotionally taxing, physically exhausting, spiritually fulfilling, wonderfully exciting and rewarding experience that he has been on over the past year and a half.

We, as a family, have been through something so extraordinary ~ a forever life changing experience that we will cherish and grow from for the rest of our lives.  So many people have asked: how do you handle all of this?  Why were you okay with this?  My answer will always be the same...  I am so proud to be a supporter  and an integral part in helping someone I love achieve their dreams.  I wouldn't have it any other way.  Who am I to say that it is not a realistic goal?  Obviously it is.  Who am I to say that Teddy should not go and live out his dreams?  I am happy I did.  Who am I to say it's not good for my children?  It was a wonderful lesson that they are proud of living through.  Who am I to say?  I am the Thruhiker's Wife.  I wouldn't have it any other way.  To watch it all unfold and hear the determination and enjoyment in his voice whenever he called was such a rewarding experience.  I feel honored to have been able to provide strength, support and love for my husband.  To be able to lead by example for my children ~ to help them learn what it feels like to support someone while they live out their dreams and achieve their goals.  My children learned what compromise and sacrifice were, but in a positive light.  Dakota and Jagger both know that they are a big part of Teddy's success.  As do I.  This experience was a huge life lesson on many different levels that I feel lucky to have learned from.

Personally, I wish everyone could feel and experience all of the positivity that my family felt through this journey.  Surround yourself with the ones you love, make a decision to be happy, live your life, create dreams and goals, and then go out there and accomplish them!!

Until he checks in from the finish line,

Late Night Check In

google image of Stevens Pass

So, after a wonderful weekend with a group of trail angels that we call family, Teddy was dropped off at the point up in Washington where he had to bail out last November.  He walked up the bail out trail and back onto the PCT and went about 10 miles before calling to check in.  He is making excellent time and is very excited to be walking in the uncharted territory that he missed last fall.  We are both very excited that it worked out so he can finish the trail at the "finish line" up in Canada ~ and he is thinking he will be there in about 9 - 12 days.  As of last night, he had ventured down into Stevens Pass, describing this terrain as more jagged and pointy, instead of the rolling, smoother terrain of Oregon.

Our excitement for Scarecrow as he moves closer to the monument in growing rapidly every day.  I can only imagine how anxious he is getting.  I will post pictures as soon as they are sent to me.  Please continue sending positive energy and prayers Teddy's way, as they are working and felt by him (and me) daily.  The trail, everyone and everything surrounding this trail adventure has been so kind and welcoming for this last leg of the trip.  For whatever reason, NOW is the time that Teddy was meant to finish this extraordinary goal.  We could not be prouder of you, Scarecrow.

Happy Trails, my love.

Go, Speedy Scarecrow!

bing images

The trail has been very kind to Scarecrow.  On Sunday, he had reported that he would have to do some road walking due to fires.  He sounded bummed out, but was happy that he could keep going.  Well, Teddy reported today, that this news was prematurely told.  As he approached the said area, the first fire closure he thought he would encounter opened up just in time for him to continue along the PCT and not step off onto the road.  And his good fortune continued as each closure reopened just before his arrival.  His hiking went as follows: 20 miles on Friday and Saturday, 19.2 miles on Sunday, after a stop at the Elk Lake Resort for a burger and some beer, camping out next to a thruhiker named Saute', and then a whopping 28.8 miles on Monday.  He is checking in today, Tuesday, around 10:00 am (his time) at Willamette Pass, excited for the kindness the trail has shown him.  He has 88 miles of the Oregon trail done in only 4 days.  WOW.  He reports it gets cold at night, down to a touch above freezing, but he is warm in his sleeping bag, and just so thankful there is NO SNOW.  He is scheduled to finish the Oregon section by Friday ~ WOOHOO ~ make his way up to our family in Benton City, Washington for some family time :) and then up to Washington to finally finish off the PCT.

Grateful for the kind trail,

The Thruhiker's Wife

Quickest Check In Yet!!

I received a 45 second check in from Scarecrow yesterday... He hiked back to back 20 mile days on Friday and Saturday, is on track with his schedule, and feels great.  The weather is perfect, but he had to do a bit of road walking along side the trail, due to some fires in the area.  He said he would call again in a few days with some updates and hopefully pictures.  He sends his best to everyone!

Thankful for his call,

And Off He Goes...

Scarecrow's departure was a success this morning.  A good night's sleep, a nice pancake breakfast with the kids, last minute packing, checking weather and trail conditions, some quick pictures taken, and we were on our way to the train station.

With several minutes to spare, which is unlike the Warrens, we said our goodbyes and Ted hopped aboard the Long Island Railroad to Jamaica, where he will take the air train to JFK.  His flight will depart at 1:00 pm today, and he will arrive in Seattle around 6:00 pm.  Dan Jump, one of the Jump Trail Angels, will be picking him up and bring him back to the Jump house for the night.  Teddy will be on a greyhound tomorrow morning, heading down to Oregon to begin the 172 miles he has to complete there.  I will post when I know exactly where he is starting, and in which direction he will travel.  His first choice will be to walk northbound from Crater Lake to Sisters, Oregon.  In the last update of conditions, all looks great for travel.

I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Waldbaum's in Center Moriches, NY.  While Teddy was hiking last summer, some of the ladies took an interest in what he was doing, and continually asked about him and offered support and well wishes.  When they found out he was returning, two of the women, Rose Hudak and Mary Firemark, put together a "care package" of treats for Teddy to take on the trail.  It was a very thoughtful, kind gesture, and we appreciate your generosity.  So here is a huge THANK YOU sent out to our trail angels from Waldbaums!!

I want to close this blog entry thanking everyone for their well wishes, goodie bags, cards, prayers and support.  Teddy and I had a wonderful discussion about all of you ~ we are very lucky to have the network of family and friends around us, cheering him on as he completes his PCT dream.

Until Next Time,

Pictures Worth 2,315 miles...

Thank you TOMMY for the great haircut
Today, November 15th, was the original day we were supposed to be picking Teddy up from the airport.  Due to the hazardous weather and subzero temperatures, his journey was cut short, and we were reunited with him 12 days earlier than anticipated.  Just over a week has passed.  It has been a busy week.  A week of joy.  A week of chaos.  A week filled with football games, show and tell, family dinners, unpacking, bike riding, quiet time, story time, lots of eating, and reconnecting with family and friends.  And a trip to the barber.  Yes.  Probably the most necessary event over the last week. First the beard came off, and then all that hair.  All of that hair that protected Scarecrow from the elements along the PCT.  Glad  you are back, Teddy.
We have been so happy to hear about all the stories and adventures that Teddy has gone through, as well as look at the amazing photographs he took while on the trail.  So many pictures that capture the beautiful, breathtaking landscapes that Teddy hiked through... desert, snow covered mountains, and almost everything in between.  We have put together a video - a pictorial journal of some of the most beautiful, memorable moments and places that Teddy has seen while away on his trip.  A way to see what Teddy experienced, though his eyes, his camera, his love of hiking.  You will get to see some of his highest moments - and some of his lowest.

Unfortunately, I am not too tech savvy to work around rules and restrictions and the blog video was blurry when viewed on a large screen .  I have tried to correct it as much as I can, and have included a link for youtube.  This link will have a clearer video with no music (as per youtube and their copyright regs)  SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION :)

Video Journal of Scarecrow's Journey

My family was blessed in so many ways by this whole experience.  Most importantly, we got to feel all of the love and support surrounding us as we all watched Teddy's journey unfold.  We are truly grateful for each and every one of OUR trail angels that provided us with trail magic along the way - this wouldn't have been such a wonderful experience without each and every one of you.  Thanks for coming along for the hike.  May all of you trails be happy ones...

Until next time,

Welcome to Washington...

After talking with Teddy over the weekend, I have lots to share.  This is actually a delayed receipt of a beautiful picture of Teddy back in Crater Lake, Oregon.  Teddy had wanted to see this place for years, and when he arrived it was foggy and overcast.  He had not intended to stay overnight there, but circumstances had it where he ended up in the Belgium couple's room, out of the rain/snow and when he awoke the next morning, the clear beautiful day presented itself to Teddy for this awesome photo.  He was extremely grateful to have seen this piece of the trail with such clarity.  As posted earlier, it was only 20 miles later that he hiked into terrible weather and had to fast-forward 144 miles up the trail.  His experience from there has been amazing.  Let me share...   The first story is one I did NOT hear from my husband, but from an email I received on my phone earlier today... it fuels my positive energy and is continuing to restore my faith in the kindness and goodness in people - I was just happy and grateful to hear Teddy's spirits were up.  The email is posted below:

Hi there Thru-Hikers Wife,

On Wednesday, October 12TH, I was set up on the Eagle Creek / PCT junction, in Oregon, when at dusk your husband came down the PCT, he said he was a Thru-Hiker, and asked politely if he could camp by me, I of course said that would be fine.  I found it amazing that someone that has been hiking, carry a lot weight, in cold rain this pass week, could be in such great spirits!  I enjoyed hearing his stories, and the ones I have read on your blog so far.  I have a flexible schedule, so if Ted / Scarecrow, needs a ride around Oregon, Washington, etc don't hesitate to give me a call, or email.  :Doug
Thank you to Doug, for your support and kindness towards Scarecrow - I know he appreciated the company as much as I appreciate the update.
After getting back on the trail in Sisters, Oregon, where he resupplied, received our packages, and rested up, it was onward towards Cascade Locks - the last stop in Oregon.  He made it there on Friday, and luckily I got to talk with him several times over the course of the next two days. He chatted for a few minutes with me, Laura and Alex at work - that's always interesting, right Alex?? And, unfortunately, at one point he called during the middle of the controlled chaos going on at our home Friday night and said, "What the hell is going on over there?" - yes, we hosted 17 junior varsity soccer girls at the house for a pasta dinner, tye-dying shirts and loud music (all which Teddy loves) - we couldn't even hear each other over the phone, so I had to delay the gathering of my blog information until the next morning.  NEVER a dull moment for the Warrens.

Teddy was looking forward to eating at the Pacific Crest Pub http://www.pacificcrestpub.com where he sat at the bar enjoying his burger and beer.  Teddy asked me to mention to our friends (and awesome supporters) Pattie and Derrick Grieco that he ordered a beer called "Walking Man" - he said it was great, and chose it for its most appropriate title.  While sitting at the bar enjoying his meal, the bartender said there was a family sitting over at a table that wanted him to join them for a drink at their table.  They had asked about the title of the place, and if there were any thruhikers that came in and the waitress said, "As a matter of fact, we have a thruhiker sitting at the bar."  Teddy said he joined them at the table and had wonderful conversation - they wanted to ask him questions about his experience, and hear his stories... more trail angels that have blessed my husband's journey.  What was even more wonderful, is that I received the following email on my phone earlier today:

I am happy to let you know we bought Scarecrow a beer in Cascade Locks, OR last night at the Pacific Crest Pub.  We really enjoyed his stories about his adventures and wish him well on the rest of his journey.  When you get him back on your trail he really needs a razor and some fattening up.  We are proud to have met him and wish him well.   George, Loretta & Rob Melanson

Thank you to the Melanson family for good company, a delicious beer, and a kind, generous spirit.   I agree on both points - the RAZOR is a must, and Thanksgiving is right around the corner - his barbecued turkey will fatten him right up.
The abundance of trail angels is ongoing... the emails I have received are inspiring - random strangers to us, sharing their stories about their encounters with Scarecrow...  we are truly blessed and thankful for each and every one.  Onward Scarecrow trekked, getting closer to the Washington border.  Teddy's next point of interest would be the Bridge of the Gods.  According to Wikipedia,
The Bridge of the Gods is a steel truss cantilever bridge that spans the Columbia River between Cascade Locks, Oregon and Washington state.  The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the Columbia River on the Bridge of the Gods and the lowest elevation of the trail is on this bridge.

In the picture at the left, you can see the PCT symbol at the top of the trestle noting the Pacific Crest Trail, with the actual bridge behind it.  This was an exciting moment for Teddy, as once he crosses the bridge, he enters the state of Washington.  The bridge itself is 1,856 feet (a little over three tenths of a mile).

I must say, as "furry" as Teddy looks, he is radiating happiness, determination and a sense of accomplishment - as he should.  He is in the home stretch (about 600 miles left).  We did begin to calculate his completion date more accurately, based on his location, hiking speed and walking/rest days needed.  It looks as if he will NOT be arriving home on his targeted finish date of Halloween - we are looking more realistically at a finish date of November 13th, with a flight home on the 15th.  Although disappointed about the delay, we are excited about the fact it is only a month away - a mere 4 weeks left until we can see this furry, (probably really smelly), accomplished thruhiker of the Pacific Crest Trail.
So, Teddy traveled over this bridge and sent the picture with the caption "I'm on the move."

entering the Bridge of the Gods

From the looks of the pictures, it doesn't look warm or sunny, but I do NOT see snow on the ground, so we are in great shape.

what does look a bit challenging are the snowy mountains in the background - YES, that is the direction in which the trail heads...

I am praying for a smooth, warm, expeditious journey for Scarecrow.   He has alot to look forward to - an upcoming visit to my cousin's home, that will include some delicious home cooked meals, a comfy bed, some care packages and treats from family and friends, wonderful company, and some much needed rest.  A day to rejuvenate his body, mind and soul for the last leg of his journey.   More immediately than all of those rewards, Teddy took out some time to celebrate his entrance into Washington with a container of Ben and Jerry's Red Velvet Cake ice cream... the next picture was sent with the text "I'm now in Washington - first I have to celebrate."
Welcome to Washington
Enjoy your ice cream, Scarecrow - you surely deserve it.  Teddy said he will probably not call again for 6 to 7 days  :( the cell phone signal is next to none, and he will not be in another town until Friday.  I wonder how many trail angels he will encounter between now and then - I certainly cannot wait to hear about it.
Until next time,

Onward into Oregon!

So, Teddy called from Seiad, California - it is listed as 1,666.6 miles on the PCT map.  I thought the numbers were a little creepy until Teddy's sister Dawn looked up their significance in a numerology book.  According to the breakdown in the book, the 1 represents the message of "what you have focused on and prayed for has come into fruition" and the 666 signifies that he should "refocus from materialistic thoughts and wants to more spiritual ones"... (hmm... maybe like a safe and prompt finish to his journey...)
It was no easy task to arrive in Seiad when he did... Teddy ended up hiking a 41.8 mile day... yes, you read that correctly - over 40 miles in one day - it took him 18 hours.  I asked how he felt, and his response was "like I walked 41 miles... will probably never do that again."  He did say that the weather, terrain, and his strength was in alignment and decided to go for it.  I am all for whatever gets him closer to Canada...

While in Seiad, Teddy camped out in this park called Mid River RV.  This is a well-known place by thruhikers, as it is convenient and inexpensive.  While there, Teddy met up with a guy named Frankie who had his RV parked in the campground.  He got into talking and the guy was so interested in what Teddy was doing - he said, "Hold on - I am calling my sister to have her throw  an extra baked potato and some ribs on the grill - we're having a guest for dinner."  Teddy was "feeling the love", excited and grateful to say the least.

a scene from PeeWee Herman?
Hunger pains were definitely absent during this town stop.  Not only did he have a delicious BBQ with the Love family: Frankie, his sister Lori, and their dad Daryll at the RV park, but he attempted a pancake challenge that most thruhikers know about and look forward to upon arrival in Seiad. As you can see, he had his work cut out for him.  They serve you 5 one pound pancakes, and if you can finish them ALL, you get your photo taken and put on their "Wall of Fame" and get to skip out on the bill.
When Teddy called that afternoon, I asked, "How'd ya make out?"  He responded, "Not even close, and I will probably NEVER EAT PANCAKES EVER AGAIN."
He did get to pack up the rest of what was unfinished to take with him - as much as he will never want to eat them again, he did pay for those suckers and it was, after all, some trail food for the next few days.

After stuffing himself with pancakes, he headed out of Seiad, the last dot in California on the PCT map.  Yes - the LAST DOT.  This means, he will arrive in Ashland, Oregon by Wednesday the latest.  Let's recap just how amazing this is... he is FINALLY in a different state, 1,730 miles under his belt, and now under 1,000 miles left - YAY - we are in triple digits...

Teddy asked me to wait a few days for the pancake picture of him to be sent before posting on the blog - good thing I did.  A few more came my way as well.  He reached the Oregon state border Tuesday afternoon and was able to send his proud moment for us to see.

His backpack and walking stick have posed for a picture next to the sign I have been waiting for, for what seems like forever... we have conversations like "you ONLY have 460 miles of Oregon" or "the 500 miles of Washington will fly by."  After trekking 1,710 miles in one state, these other states will "seemlike nothing."
We all know they are not nothing, though... Scarecrow will be heading into the Cascade Mountains, with rougher terrain, and much lower temperatures.  He said it is already uncomfortably cold at night... good thing that grizzly beard is on his face...

So tomorrow, Wednesday, September 28th, Scarecrow will pass through Ashland, pick up his goodies that are waiting for him, and hopefully be able to call me again with his next mail drop.  I will post it as soon as I know it.  Teddy did want me to thank everyone for their continued support through letters, well wishes, treats, helping out with Dakota and Jagger, Tina Vath keeping the fish fed, and patience with his wife as he continues onward into Oregon.

Until next time,

Text From Teddy...

I received this text this morning... he must not have reached the halfway point until today... but it fell on the 10 year anniversary of his completion of the Appalachian Trail...

Babe: Big day today. I hit the half way point and completed the A.T. 10 years ago today. I love you and thank you for your support. This would not be happening if it wasn't for you. SCARECROW

Teddy, I love you so much - dirty hands, grizzly beard and all... I cannot even describe the amount of pride and love I feel for you and your decision to embark on this journey.  We had an amazing conversation on the phone yesterday which has given me the strength to get through the other 1,325 miles that you will be gone.
Keep on trekking, don't lose sight of your vision, and know that your dream of thruhiking the PCT is within your reach.
Dakota, Jagger and I, along with so many friends and family are here, following your story, cheering you on, sending you positive energy, love and prayers for a safe, and wonderful trip.  The rest is up to you...

All my love, forever and always,

Learning How to Climb...

After 5 days of seeing no one, and speaking to only me briefly on the phone, Teddy arrived in Kennedy Meadows, received all of his packages and goodies, and is heading out towards the Sierra Mountains.  It was recommended in "Yogi's PCT Handbook" to leave Kennedy Meadows with an extra day of food to account for one of the most unique experiences on this trip - to summit Mt. Whitney.  The western slope of the mountain lies within Sequoia National Park, one of the two national parks that Teddy will travel through during this next leg of the trip.  He is currently about 40 miles from entering the parks.

Sequoia National Park sign
via google images
The PCT enters Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park at mile 753 and exits the parks at mile 854.  In reading through Teddy's books for information, I came across this notice:  As of January 2011, thruhikers along the Pacific Crest Trail and the John Muir Trail with a valid wilderness permit must use portable, park approved, bearproof storage containers.

Lovely.  Teddy might just get another encounter with a bear, but this time, the bear will not be training for any movie.

I know from talking with Teddy, that climbing Mt. Whitney is one of the biggest highlights of his trip.  I am so happy that he is approaching this triumph - he needed a pick-me-up after his rash ordeal.  I want to share a few facts about this mountain that my husband is about to climb.

Mount Whitney is the highest summit in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet.   The most popular route to the summit is by way of the Mount Whitney Trail which starts at Whitney Portal, 13 miles west of the town of Lone Pine. The hike is about 22 miles round trip with an elevation gain of over 6,100 feet.  The High Sierra, including Mount Whitney, has unpredictable weather patterns.  Common advice is to be off the peak by noon during the summer monsoon season, between June and September.  Lightening is a frequent occurrence at the peak on summer afternoons.  Let's hope Teddy read up on his Wikipedia facts before leaving on this trek...

High Sierra Trail
via google images
Residents of Lone Pine financed the first trail to the summit, engineered by Gustave Marsh, and completed it on July 22, 1904.  Breathtaking photographs of the trails leading up to Mount Whitney, as well as the photo at left, can be found on many sites - I took these from Wikipedia.  Although this is not a picture of Teddy, I hope the experience is just as amazing as it appears in this photo.

via google images
I also learned that there is a hut at the summit of the mountain, known as the Smithsonian Institution Shelter.  This shelter was constructed back in 1909, after a hiker named Bryd Surby was struck and killed by lightning while eating lunch on the exposed summit.  In response to this event, Gustave Marsh began work on the stone hut that would become the Smithsonian Institution Shelter, and completed it in 1909.  The shelter was built to house scientists who used the 14,505-foot summit to study high-altitude phenomena in the time before sustained high-altitude flight was possible.

So, there you have it.  A bunch of interesting, crazy facts about the next piece of Scarecrow's adventure.  Below is a picture of the plaque that is mounted at the summit of Mt. Whitney.  I am anxiously awaiting for Teddy's photo of this amazing accomplishment.  I am sure that he will climb this mountain, reach the summit, and take a big breath... and then, he will fill up with pride and accomplishment in the realization that he has achieved this extraordinary feat.

There are times in  life when you gotta crawl
Lose your grip, trip an' fall
When you can't lean on no one else
That's when you find yourself...
I've been around an' I've  noticed that
Walkin's easier when the road is flat
Them danged ol' heels'll get you every time
Yeah, the good Lord gave us mountains
So we could learn how to climb...       ~Lonestar

Adventurous Dad = Adventurous Children

So, this has been the longest stretch of time without a word from Teddy. I don't think he will have much to report, as he is by himself, hiking through the last part of the Mojave Desert.  He is approaching Kennedy Meadows, which will be an exciting stop for Teddy, as once he arrives there, he will pick up a new pair of hiking shoes he had ordered, his ice axe, and a bunch of goodies from the kids and I.  It is our hope that all the Snickers bars and girl scout cookies aren't melted and crushed by the time he receives them.  Once arriving in Kennedy Meadows, Teddy will have walked 703 miles - only 1,947 left to go.  What an adventurer.

The kids are hanging in there, anxiously awaiting for Teddy to call, ready to catch him up on all that we are doing to keep busy.  They truly channeled their dad's adventurous spirit on Sunday, when they decided to go groundhog hunting in our back yard. Rubi, our dog, was barking at something that was under a piece of fencing.  Instead of bringing the dog inside, Dakota and Jagger decided to lift up the piece of fencing to see what Rubi was barking at.  Rubi anxiously waited in attack mode while the kids lifted lawn chairs, fencing, and planks of wood to uncover what was described as an enormous groundhog.  Jagger told me later it was the size of the gas tank for the barbecue.  Rubi was trying to bite it, it was up on its hind legs hissing at the kids and the dog, while the kids were totally freaking out, now not knowing what to do.  They surprisingly were able to grab the dog, and ran inside.  What they did not anticipate was all of the mud that Rubi brought in with her.  So, while I was out, now they had a muddy house, a dog that was freaking out, and a huge groundhog loose in the back yard.

via google images
I did not receive the call about any of this until after the fact - after the kids cleaned Rubi, after cleaning up all of the mud that got into the house, after all of the fencing had been put back in its place, along with the planks of wood and the lawn furniture.  Now that I know what my adventurous children are TRULY capable of, there should be no problems with the chores I give them - ranging from "empty the dishwasher" to "fold up the clean towels."  Any complaints from them now, and I will just send them back outside to hunt for the groundhog.

We anticipate Teddy calling in the next day or two - as soon as he does, I will be sure to report all that is unfolding in his adventure, and hopefully nothing else on the groundhog hunting going on here.

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due...

A surprise call from Teddy!! He made it to Tehachapi Pass - 567 miles into the trail.  This latest mileage was the result of a 24 mile day on Saturday, followed by a 16 mile day on Sunday.  WOW.  He said he felt strong after resting those few extra days in Hikertown.  I give him a lot of credit, as the rash is still all over his body, but he is just fighting through it now - in total, this rash only set him back 3 days on his "schedule".  Not too bad... with mile days like Saturday, he will make up his time very quickly, and may even catch up to his friends, Evil Goat and TOG.
Speaking of TOG, and giving credit where credit is due, he had mentioned to us earlier in the month that he was arranging to have certificates sent for Dakota and Jagger in acknowledgement and appreciation for the support they have shown Teddy on this journey.  They were being sent from an organization the U.K. where TOG is from.  This was such a nice gesture - so thoughtful and kind - to have my children recognized for their support by someone who has only heard of them through their father's praise.  I just received them via email yesterday.

Talk about giving credit... these two amazing children truly do deserve so much credit - if it weren't for their strong minds, positive thoughts, loving hearts, and endless support and encouragement for their father, Teddy would not be doing as well as he is.  He would not be experiencing this once in a lifetime opportunity with freedom to walk it, peace of mind to enjoy it, and the determination to finish it.  So, here's to you both: Dakota & Jagger - thank you for all of your continued support, encouragement, generosity and love that you continue to give - you make daddy and I so proud to be your parents.

Rashes & Record Temperatures = Really Rough Ramble

Ok, so Teddy is a month into his trip - every time he calls, he sounds so strong, energetic and speaks in such a positive way.  Enter poodle-dog bush.  Pictured at left, this plant is covering many parts of the trail in Southern California.  Teddy has unfortunately been introduced to this beautiful, yet harmful plant along the way.  According to Wikipedia, poodle-dog bush causes severe irritation if touched, akin to poison oak or stinging nettle.  It can raise blisters lasting as long as two weeks.  Even worse, Teddy also came into contact with poison oak, so between the two, he is sporting a nasty, itchy, uncomfortable rash.  It appears on his skin as if he was burned - he said it is really gross and extremely uncomfortable.  Hopefully it will go away before its two week span is up. To make matters worse, there have been record heat waves in the area where he is hiking.  He said yesterday, it registered at 104 degrees, and I am sure, with hiking through the Mojave desert, his situation cannot be too comfortable. The photo below was taken by Teddy on his cell phone as he began the Mojave Desert -  in all the days he has been walking, there has not been a day of rain.

I have tried to find other hikers' photos to post, so you have an idea of the terrain that Teddy is hiking through.  The photos are from the PCT website, taken by other hikers along their journey.

Hang in there, Scarecrow - before you know it your rash will be healed, your body rehydrated, and you will be calling me about record snowfalls in the Sierra Mountains, where you will be using your mighty ice axe and subzero tolerant sleeping bag.  Brrrrrrr....

Hey Boo-Boo... Yogi here...

Now 3 weeks into his hike, Teddy sounds strong, and feels great daily as he treks onward towards Canada.  He reached Cajon Pass (Interstate 15) for those of you following a map.  I guess that meal from McDonald's was enough fuel to move him right along.

As he left, about 5 miles in, he came across more trail magic, in the form of a water cache, and was able to fill up some of his water containers for the day.  Again, things like this are put on the trail by people who just want to help out the hikers, so thank you to them!!  Teddy said next to this water station was a couple of lounge chairs in the shade.  How nice!

While at the water cache, there was a register book for the hikers to sign in.  Teddy noticed there were two thruhikers just about 5 miles ahead of him - one going by the trail name "Evil Goat" and the other by U.K. (actually I learned later that his trail name is "TOG") but Teddy referenced him as U.K. so for now, we'll keep it as that.  And onward went Scarecrow, moving along as his rapid pace...

Around the 350 mile mark, Scarecrow finally caught up to Evil Goat.  He had his headphones on and was standing in the shade.  Teddy actually said that Evil Goat told him "shade should be used."  They chatted for a bit, and then Teddy moved along down the trail.  About 10 miles up, he caught up with U.K. - but not officially yet.  He said this guy was writing stuff in the sand as he went along - he had written 11:40 - that meant Ted was only 20 minutes behind him.  He walked ahead, and eventually caught up to him, in person, and started chatting.  He gathered info for me (as instructed)  - U.K. is from England (surprise, surprise), is a school teacher, and whose trail name is really Tog, not U.K.  Confused?? Me too. It's ok.

Teddy left, and continued walking until he came across a couple picnicking about 13 miles later.  They had a blanket spread out right next to the trail, and were just hanging out with their dog.  They asked immediately if he was a thruhiker on the PCT.  They were amazed that they were sitting right next to the actual trail.  Teddy stopped, chatted, and happily accepted the gifts of water, cold root beer and a bottle of Fat Tire beer.  Yummy.  He explained to the couple about "Yogi-ing" - according to the urban dictionary, it is the art of politely gathering food from other hikers/campers by means of conversation without actually asking for it.  The couple got a kick out of the term, but were happy to help Teddy out.  And again, Scarecrow moved on.
Overall, Teddy has said all of these people he has run into have been helpful and generous to say the least.  Thank you to all for helping make Scarecrow's journey more enjoyable.

Teddy was aiming for Guffy Camp, but decided to continue on to the town 5 miles further to stay for the night.  He hiked into Blueridge campground, and planned a "zero day" to restock food, energy, and hopefully call home :) I guess he deserves a zero day by this point - he is, at this point, 367 miles into his trip.  Only 2,283 miles left.  Hope he perfects his "yogi" skills to score some treats along the way.

From No One to Just About Everyone...

In each of my phone conversations with Ted, he continues to tell me how he remains by himself, hiking along. He has mentioned missing the company of people, his family, fellow hikers, anyone... Well, he got his wish.  As he left Big Bear City, he had remembered that it was suggested that he go via highway 18, but he chose to hike along side VanDusen Canyon Road.  He didn't quite remember why that particular route was suggested until he set up camp that evening.  The traffic on the road he did choose was UNBELIEVABLE.  He could not believe how many people were traveling on this road, and it made for a very busy, loud evening.  He even saw a Jeep Club trek though... at first this was cool, simply for the fact that we have 2 of our own, but as they drove on through, Ted said not a single one was like ours... they were all decked out, dressed up, like one big Quadratec parade.  Of course, no pictures to post :(  So much for solitude.

Saturday morning, Ted awoke to even more Jeeps passing by, and decided to get an early start, as he had 100 miles to go before reaching Wrightwood.  The excitement of people, cars, etc had him pumped, hoping to run into more people.  Well, he did just that.

Along the trail, he came upon Mike and his horse Red.  From what Ted has said, I don't believe he is a thruhiker, but it was exciting Ted to now meet new, fellow hikers to share his stories with. He chatted for awhile, in the shade I am sure, and then moved on to continue his trek to Wrightwood.

Ted was able to hike a total of 20 miles on Saturday, and continued to meet up with fellow hikers.  Except this next group was Boy Scout Troop 127.  He said he felt so good talking with the boys and their leader about what he was trying to accomplish.  They ate together, shared some stories, and let the kids ask questions about his experiences so far.  The boys and their leader were so taken in with Ted, and the leader even started using Ted in his lessons and instructions for the troop.  They were going to prepare to do a 5 mile hike for the next day, and he went on to the boys about Ted was going to walk 5 miles before stopping for breakfast.  They were all very enthusiatic and interested in Scarecrow's adventures and even posed for a group picture before he set off to continue on.

Teddy began his day hiking on Sunday, June 19, with the goal in mind to reach the pavilion 5 miles away.  I guess he was going to treat himself for Father's day by using a privy (Noun: A toilet located in a small shed outside a house or other building; outhouse.) instead of his usual routine of just digging a hole.  Wow - some Father's Day gift, heh?? Well, in case you are at the edge of your seat, wondering if he made it... he did.  He sat comfortably in the privy, after hiking 5 miles, and all is well for Scarecrow.

So, by Sunday afternoon, Teddy has hiked 306 miles, and feeling strong.  He hiked into a place called Deep Creek Hot Springs. Wikipedia states: Located directly on the PCT, north of Big Bear City, California,  these natural hot springs are located in the San Bernardino National Forest. The pools were built by volunteers over a period of years and are largely maintained by volunteers in the pristine state you see them in today. The beautiful and unique landscape, the soothing hot spring waters mixing with the cool mountain stream, local custom and tradition make for a wonderful clothing-optional setting to be enjoyed by all. Since the time Native Americans inhabited the area, people from all over the world have come to the Springs to get away, soak, sunbathe, relax, and enjoy the natural environment all year long.

Anyone who knows Teddy, knows he did NOT exercise the clothing optional portion of the area.  He soaked in shorts, relaxing and relieving his achy muscles.  He did encounter others that were not so private... like the very elderly man, who when was done soaking, put back on what he thought were the essentials.  His sun hat, flip flops and his back pack... nope - nothing else.  Ted said it was quite a site. He did snap a picture for the scrapbook - cannot wait to see that one.
After his soak in the springs, he was able to bust out a 25 mile day, which brought him to a McDonald's about a quarter mile off the trail by about 10 pm for some dinner.  Well deserved Scarecrow.

As creepy as this sounds, Teddy pitched his tent in an empty lot behind the McDonald's as to be the first one in to get a big breakfast before the next days hike.  With another 25 mile day ahead of him, he was definitely looking forward to a yummy breakfast.  What does someone who is about to walk another 25 miles eat you ask?  Well, I now know - 2 sausage, egg, and cheese mcgriddles, 4 hash browns and a large coffee.  I guess when you are on your third 25 mile day in a row, calorie counting is not on your list.

Until next time,
